Dining Hall Student Conduct & Community Standards

Leaders with Heart Community Standards

The Huron Dining Hall & Retail Bistro are more than a place to eat—they are shared community spaces where students must demonstrate respect, integrity, responsibility, and care for others. By participating in the meal plan program, students agree to uphold the following Terms and Conditions which are Community Expectations.

Failure to comply with these standards may result in corrective action in accordance with the Residence Community Living Standards, Non-Academic Student Code of Conduct or other related policies. Residence meal plan holders agree to comply with these terms as part of their Huron Residence contract agreement.

1. Respect for Others

Students are expected to:

  • Treat fellow students, staff, faculty, and guests with dignity, kindness, and courtesy.
  • Foster an inclusive environment that welcomes individuals of all backgrounds, identities, cultures, and beliefs.
  • Use respectful language and behavior at all times.
  • Refrain from harassment, discrimination, bullying, intimidation, or disruptive conduct.
  • Show patience and consideration during busy meal periods.

2. Ethical Use of the Meal Plan

Students agree to:

  • Use their meal plan only in accordance with Huron policies.
  • Present their valid Western1 identification whenever accessing the Dining Hall.
  • Not share, transfer, sell, lend, or misuse their meal plan or Western1 card.
  • Only consume food inside the dining hall. Removing food from the dining hall is not permitted as part of the All You Care to Eat program. For food options to takeaway, the Retail Bistro is available just outside the Dining Hall on the ground floor of Burnlea Hall
  • Not attempt to gain access to meals, discounts, or services through dishonest means.

3. Responsible Stewardship of Resources

Students are expected to:

  • Take only the food they reasonably intend to eat.
  • Minimize food waste whenever possible.
  • Use dining hall supplies responsibly.
  • Support sustainable dining practices and recycling initiatives.
  • Respect the effort and resources required to provide meals for the entire community.

4. Care for the Dining Environment

Students agree to:

  • Clean up after themselves and leave tables in good condition for others.
  • Dispose of food waste at the dedicated composting station.
  • Return dishes, cups, mugs, and utensils to designated areas.
  • Dispose of waste properly using recycling and composting stations.
  • Report spills, hazards, or damage to staff.
  • Help maintain a welcoming and safe environment.

5. Respect for Dining Staff

Students will:

  • Treat all dining hall employees with courtesy and appreciation.
  • Follow reasonable directions provided by staff members.
  • Recognize that dining staff contribute significantly to the community's well-being.
  • Address concerns through respectful communication and established feedback processes.

6. Health, Safety, and Well-being

Students must:

  • Follow all food safety, health, and sanitation requirements.
  • Respect allergy and dietary accommodation protocols.
  • Avoid behavior that may endanger themselves or others.
  • Comply with emergency procedures and Huron policies.
  • Refrain from bringing prohibited items into the dining hall.

7. Responsible Guest Hosting

Meal plan holders have 2 free guest meal vouchers per term. When using these, students agree to:

  • Ensure guests follow all dining hall rules.
  • Remain accountable for the conduct of their guests.
  • Use guest passes and meal privileges appropriately.
  • Respect occupancy limits and dining hall procedures.

8. Community Conduct Expectations

Students shall not:

  • Remove dining hall property without authorization.
  • Damage facilities, furnishings, equipment, or décor.
  • Engage in disorderly, aggressive, or unsafe behavior.
  • Access the dining hall before or after defined hours of operation.
  • Interfere with the rights of others to enjoy the dining experience.

9. Accountability

Failure to comply with these Terms and Conditions may result in:

  • Verbal or written warnings to remain on student’s file while attending Huron.
  • Suspension of meal plan privileges. Depending on the infraction could be temporary or permanent suspension.
  • Restitution for damages or misuse.
  • Referral to the Huron’s Code of Conduct review process.
  • Additional disciplinary action as determined by applicable Huron policies.
  • Other authority involvement depending on the severity of the infraction.

10. Community Commitment

By participating in the university meal plan program, students affirm their commitment to:

  • Lead with integrity.
  • Act with compassion.
  • Serve others with humility.
  • Respect the dignity of every person.
  • Contribute positively to a vibrant, ethical, and caring campus community.
